To understand the Cuba of today McClure takes the reader back to the Soviet Union in 1963 when Castro undertook his 40-day “victory tour.” Castro was the Soviet’s new revolutionary hero with his transformation of Cuba into a communist/socialist country. McClure was also in the Soviet Union (with his camera) in 1963 as a graduate Russian language student.
In 2011, McClure went to Cuba as an independent photojournalist where he met and photographed a broad cross section of Cubans including a former Castro guerrilla, and the retired photographer for Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.
As the U.S. and Cuba establish stronger ties and American tourism in Cuba increases, McClure writes about the major obstacles to be overcome for the Cubans to begin experiencing the benefits of capitalism and democracy.
